Grantchester

  • Original producer: Lovely Day

It’s 1953, and Sidney Chambers (James Norton, Happy Valley) is vicar of Grantchester, a picturesque village nestled in the English countryside and close to the city of Cambridge. Sidney is a terrific parish priest - never narrow-minded or judgemental, he’s a curious, fun-loving man with plenty of time for other people. While he might consume too many whiskeys, play his jazz too loudly, and sometimes fall for the wrong women, Sidney’s is a quiet life. Or at least, it has been – up until the moment that murder comes his way…

Sidney Chambers is pulled from his life as parish priest and pushed into the dangerous world of lies, betrayal and murder. Quickly finding that his clear-sighted insight into the human condition and the natural trust that he engenders in people, means that he excels in his new position as ‘priest detective’. Crime isn’t the only worldly matter that occupies Sidney’s heart. Smitten with the witty, beautiful, Amanda (Morven Chirstie, Young Victoria), Sidney’s hopes of winning her heart have been dashed ever since he became a clergyman – and why would the daughter of a wealthy diplomat ever be interested in a lowly vicar like him? Indeed, he wonders whether perhaps marriage is for him – at least until he strikes up a friendship with Hildegard Staunton (Pheline Roggan, Soul Train), a stunning German widow.

And so begins a turbulent love triangle that soon unfolds. Joining Sidney as he journeys into the dark world of murder is the affable Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green, Strike Back), the naive but well-meaning curate Leonard Finch (Al Weaver), and his austere and constantly disapproving housekeeper Mrs Maguire (Tessa Peake-Jones, Doctor Who). In a post-World War II era, Sydney still bears the scars of battle – although he wants to find love and goodness in everyone, he remains ruthless whenever he discovers the opposite.
